You have probably heard people talking about the Green New Deal, but do you really know what it is? Most people don't, and for a while, none of us did either. When you hear talk about the Green New Deal it is usually vague, and hard to understand. The resources on this page are to help you understand what the Green New Deal is, and why it is so important.
The Green New Deal is a 14 page resolution which addresses the current climate crisis, all the ways we, as a country, can avert that crisis, and what averting the crisis will cost us. In 2018, the world's best climate scientists came out with some truly devastating news. If we, as a planet, are to stay in a safe zone of only 1.5 degrees celsius warming, we have to reach zero emissions by 2030. If we fail to do so, there will be terrible consequences, such as mass migration and displacement, forest fires, floods, and famine. When they heard this catastrophic news, a few congressmen and women got together to draft a resolution, which is now called the Green New Deal. It outlines how we can avert the Climate crisis, such as switching to electric cars, solar and wind powered energy, etc. Unfortunately, we have gone past the time threshold when we could have slowly phase out fossil fuels. As it stands now, we have to act quickly, if we want to keep living comfortably. Acting quickly, means an immense amount of job loss for all of those employed by businesses which run on fossil fuels. The second part of the Green New Deal addresses how we can keep the working class safe in this time of transformation. This includes universal health care, training for new, Green jobs, as well as other ideas.
The Green New Deal however, is just a resolution. If it passes, it symbolizes the government's promise to do everything in it's power to avert the climate crisis. No bills will be passed, no laws will be put into effect. It is just the first step in a long battle that needs to be taken quickly, but instead is being met with much distain. Change is hard to create, and hard to accept. That is why we need as many people as possible to understand what the Green New Deal is, how important it is, and why we need it to pass.
